"The raised fist is probably the most significant symbol associated with revolution and resistance - a sign of power to those oppressed and restrained by outdated systems and beliefs. We create connection and division with a simple gesture. I approached the topic of democracy by opening those hands and joining them all into a singular being, depicting a unifying harmony without losing the touch and unique personality of each individual, the spirit of democracy. Each hand has its talent, a task to fulfill while keeping the whole together. In honor of the revolution of Baden, one of the hands is holding a "Pickelhaube", a spiked helmet worn by Prussian soldiers, which is getting soiled with blood; both a reminder of the many lives lost among the revolutionaries at the hands of Prussia, but also, held up in a victorious pose, a sign of eventual triumph, as the revolution paved the way to form a democracy even upon initial defeat. Additionally the figure is holding a sword and wearing palm branches as depicted on a commemorative military medal awarded to troops that helped defeat the revolutionaries, symbolizing a reclaim of a heavy loss that weighs on the nation."

This painting was entered into the art competition with the theme "Democracy & Revolution" in honor of the 175 year anniversary of the revolution of Baden and was selected for showcase among the best 14 entries.
